Taste of the Region

Experience an extravaganza for taste buds! Sample the salty blast of a warm potato chip right from the factory or the sweetness of a shoofly pie. Sit down to a hearty family-style meal featuring the best of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. Amish roadside produce stands and Adams County orchards offer the freshest goods anywhere, or dine in an elegant historic country inn by candlelight. We can promise you definitely won't walk away hungry!

DAY ONE - GETTYSBURG
Stop by to celebrate Adams County #1 fruit - APPLES! Each year, the first weekend in May and the first 2 weekends in October, the local producers of 7 million apples bring together very special events at the South Mountain Fairgrounds. If you happen to make it to either the Apple Blossom Festival in May or the Apple Harvest Festival in October, you will be treated to apple edibles unlike anything you have tried before. Sample Apple Sausage, Apple Pizza, Apple Butter, and see Apple Cider made before taking some home to share. Or you may want to go for a hot and juicy open pit barbecue sandwich or hot ham and cheese while enjoying over a hundred craft and agricultural displays, orchard tours, or as you wander through rows of antique automobiles.

If you happen to visit any other time of the year, (there isn't a bad time of year to visit) you may want to spend a good bit of your time refueling yourself on our tantalizing delicacies. While exploring the county, be sure to take a short drive to Fairfield, just 8 miles west of Gettysburg. Located at 15 W. Main Street is a quaint, historic inn properly named the Historic Fairfield Inn. In operation since 1757, this combination Bed & Breakfast and restaurant serves up some of the best Chicken & Biscuits you will ever eat. While there also visit the Underground Railroad station upstairs or make reservations at their Dinner Theater.

You may wish to take in lunch at the Dobbin House Restaurant where you can dine on Roast Duck Adams County. Roasted in a hearth oven with tart Adams County apples and hard cider, this moist duck is served up with delicious cider sauce seasoned with citrus herbs. For desert, dig into a piece of Adams County Apple Pie! If you prefer a relaxed atmosphere for dining, try the Springhouse Tavern downstairs where natural springs still bubble from the ground. After dining wander through the Country Curiosity Store or take a peak at the Underground Railroad Station here at the Dobbin House.

Up and down the streets of Gettysburg, sample fudge, ice cream, baked goods, breads, cheeses and coffee concoctions. If you still have room for dinner, dine at the Farnsworth House. Whether enjoying fine dining upstairs, tavern dining downstairs or outdoor dining in the garden, guests will enjoy a variety of period fair. Ask your server - dressed in 1860s garb, about their signature Game Pie, Pumpkin Fritters, Peanut Soup, Spoon Bread, and Sweet Potato Pudding and for desert, Walnut Apple Cake. Venture out of town to the Adams County Winery for delectable selections of wines, including Adams Apple, a tribute to the local fruit.

In Adams County, you will see our love of the Apple - and learn new ways to prepare the tasty fruit that you never would have thought of.

DAY TWO - YORK
Experience a "Snack Attack", or choose to indulge in Nature's Bounty at a Farmer's Market. Whatever your taste, York County has something to tempt your taste buds

Spend your morning exploring York County's beautiful countryside. Start the day at Hope Acres with a tour of the truly amazing robotic faming operation, where cows are pampered. After the tour spend some time at the Brown Cow Country Market where Hope Acres products are sold. Enjoy a delicious cone of homemade ice cream or another special treat! Next, stop by Brown's Orchards and Farm Market and enjoy delicious cider, fresh fruits and vegetables, and much more. Take in the beautiful orchard view at the snack bar/pavilion and enjoy a seasonal treat. While you're enjoying the tastes of York County, stop at Perrydell Farm, an old fashioned, family-owned dairy. Enjoy some their very own chocolate milk, or homemade ice cream!

Consider having lunch at any number of York County establishments. Choose York's Central Market for some local favorites, or choose one of the local favorites including Blue Moon Café, the Offcenter Grill, Central Family Restaurant, or one of the many others.

Start you afternoon at the Stauffer's Cookie Outlet, home of the original animal cracker! Get a behind the scenes look at how some of America's favorite snack foods are made! Sample warm potato chips at Martins, or choose to visit Utz Quality Foods, or Snyder's of Hanover to see them transform a spud into fresh potato chips! Be sure to stop in at the Factory Outlets to take yours home! End the day with a tour of the Wolfgang Candy Company. Voted one of the "Top 5 Tasty Tours" by the Food Network, a tour of Wolfgang allows you to see, smell and taste your favorite candy cooking, mixing, and coating.

For dinner, York County offers a number of choices to suit your taste. Choose the Commonwealth Room for a AAA 4-diamond experiece, or perhaps the White Rose for casual dining in a cozy environment.
